The project

The brief

Quarterlight’s essay was about the hour nobody plans for, after work and before anything else. They wanted one strong image, black and white, that would survive cheap paper.

How it was made

I worked in solid black and bare paper only, cutting the shapes until the people read as a mood more than a scene. The proof sheet of blocks is part of how I test what can go.

The result

The image ran across a full page and was picked up for the magazine’s year-end cover round-up.
